We're Nuts About Fall!
Leaves changing colors, cool weather...must be fall!
Mrs. Guest's class is jumping into fall!
Beginning September 15th, students will be diving head first into fall time. Leaves, Apples, Acorns, and Scarecrows will be some of the topics we will discuss for the next four weeks. Students will be learning new vocabulary, recipes, and facts that center around fall.
Let it Fall!
As part of my internship for Western Carolina University, I must teach four lesson plans. At the beginning of this year I asked the students what they want to learn about and one student said fall! I immediately fell in love with the idea of a fall unit. There is so many hands on activities that the students can participate in and bring home to show you! Throughout this unit, your children will be learning new vocabulary that correlates with the fall theme as well as complete some common core objectives. I want this to be a fun experience for your children and for you! We invite full participation when we go on our field trip and when we do our cooking lesson.
What books will we be reading during this unit?
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves.
This book plays off of the old story of the old lady who swallowed a fly. This book incorporates many fall elements including leaves, pumpkins, and a scarecrow. This story is great for children to learn new vocabulary words as they look at the colorful pictures.
Applesauce Season
This book is one that we can all relate to during the fall season. A girl is describing her family's applesauce-making ritual explaining the buying, peeling, cooking and stirring process. This book is full of colorful apples and also includes an applesauce recipe.
The Lonely Scarecrow
This book is about a scarecrow who wants to be friends with the birds and animals that play at the edge of his wheat field, but they are afraid of him because of his clothing and "his beady eyes, his crooked nose, and his jagged metal mouth." It talks about friendship and acceptance of all different type of "people". This book has colorful pictures that are sure to keep everyone's attention.
Songs! Songs! Songs!
This song is going to be one of the many songs we will sing throughout our fall unit. Here is a video so your child can begin to learn the song!
Falling Leaves - Nursery Rhyme with Lyrics & Sing Along
Dress Like a Scarecrow Day!
Pull out your straw hats and flannel shirts because during our scarecrow week, we will have a scarecrow contest to see who can look like the best scarecrow. Parents are also invited to participate in our contest. The winner gets to take home a $25 Walmart gift card for school supplies!
