SILVER GRAPHICS FUNDRAISER IS BACK!
PLEASE WATCH FOR AN EMAIL COMING SOON WITH THE LINK TO THE PERMISSION FORM.
The Harborview PTA is partnering with Silver Graphics for our Spring Fundraiser this year. Silver Graphics will print your child’s art on products of your choice ranging from magnets to ceramic mugs to canvas totes and more! The PTA needs your permission to send your child’s artwork to Silver Graphics, it will be scanned and returned. They then create a PRIVATE online shop and provide us with a unique school code so that you can buy and sell products with your child’s artwork on them.
Each student also has their own access code and only those with this access code can see their artwork, that will be up to YOU to decide who to share the access code with (Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, etc.). The school and PTA will also have a school wide access code which will allow us to see all the artwork in a gallery organized by teacher, but ONLY those with that code can access this PRIVATE online shop.
If you DO NOT receive an email by Monday Feb. 6th with the permission form attached, please let us know so we can make sure we get your permission to send in your child's artwork.
We hope you can join us!

OUR GOAL: EVERY STUDENT WILL ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY.....and here's why it is so important!
Regular school attendance is being in school 95% of the year which breaks down to missing 9 or fewer days per year. A student who is considered "chronically absent" has missed 10% or more of the school year.
What does that mean for student learning?
Kindergarten students who are chronically absent have a 61% chance of reading below grade level in third grade.
Kindergarten and first-grade students who are chronically absent have an 81% chance of reading below grade level in third grade.
In 4th grade, chronically absent students score an average of 12 points lower on NAEP tests than students who showed regular attendance.
By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
By 9th grade, chronic absence becomes a better predictor of a student dropping out than any 8th grade test score.
We are well aware of the difficult times we are living in and so of course, with the COVID/FLU/Common Cold season in full swing, we are seeing more absences than normal. Absence due to illness is unavoidable. We do appreciate your efforts to plan trips and appointments outside of the school day/year. We simply can't replicate the teaching/modeling/guided practice that occurs in elementary school using worksheets and online resources, so when kids miss school they really do miss a lot of learning. We appreciate your efforts to support getting your kids to school on time each day and as always, if we can assist in any way please reach out.
Alaska Reads Act
I'd like to encourage you to look on the Alaska Dept. of Education website to look at the Alaska Reads Act. You may also like to take a moment to look at the Alaska Reads Act District Reading Intervention plan. These are the proposed regulations and would go into effect in the '23-'24 school year.
At Harborview Elementary we have used the DIBELS Amplify screening tool for years. We have used that data to guide further needed assessments and to help guide our reading interventions during our What I Need (WIN) time. All students in our school participate in WIN time for 30 minutes a day Monday through Thursday. This is a time for us to target the skills our students need to be succesful readers. The Alaska Reads Act adds new regulations for how we provide this support. Individual Reading Plans are a new regulation that will apply to any students shown to have a dificiency on the DIBELS assessment (also known as Amplify). There are also new regulations for student promotion at grades K-3. There are other areas such as Early Learning and Teacher Certification that have proposed regulations as well. DEED is currently taking public comment before voting on regulations in April. We will be watching this closely and working to keep you updated on the latest information.
