An End of Year Message from our Executive Director, Dr. Kristen Williams
It’s been an unusual year, and it seems we might be getting back to normal, whatever that means. Day after day, you have shown up for our students, their families, and your colleagues. Your smiles have brightened the hearts of so many. Thank you. You are seen and appreciated.
I hope that you find some time to do whatever it is that makes you happy over the summer break. Spend time with family and friends, read a book, exercise, or do absolutely nothing at all. That’s the great thing about summer, you can do whatever you want.
May your summer be peaceful, relaxed, and fun. We’ll see you soon.
Kristen Williams, Executive Director for Disability Services

- New! The SAISD Disability Services Course Catalog Supplement is available for secondary course selection. You can find the link here.
- Transportation Supplements- Updates have been made to the Transportation How-To in an effort to address recent inquiries regarding transportation services for non-ESY summer programs (i.e. "Jumpstart). For those who have completed the training, please be advised that this must be addressed for any students on your case list who will be participating in a non-ESY summer program who also require transportation.
The following updates are reflected in four areas of the How-To:
Contingency Plans
Contingency Plans must be included in all Annual IEPs, with the exception of students who qualify as Speech Only. (Refer to this memo:)
- If different plans are needed for the current school year and next school year, two forms can be added. To distinguish the two plans apart from one another, use the field at the top of the form for “Effective Date for this Plan.”
- For the current school year and for the next school year: Delete any plan that is no longer applicable. Remember, both forms must be printed with the IEP; simply check the box next to the red statement, “If checked, print with the Full ARD with Supplements report”.

Graduation Rehearsals
Getting Ready for Jumpstart!
All SAISD students have access to Jumpstart. Please ensure the opportunity to attend Jumpstart is extended to all your students.
- Intersession activities are considered enrichment, therefore; the IEP will not be fully in place. However, students may need to receive services that allow them to participate, such as specially designed programming for self-contained settings, personal care, health services, behavior and safety supports, and accommodations such as transportation.
- ACE Programming
- For students with significant intellectual or cognitive disabilities who typically receive their instruction in an ACE setting, we are developing cluster programs that will provide thematically driven activities and enrichment focused on general skill development, basic literacy and numeracy, social skills, communication, and fun.
- If a student’s current campus does not have the program during the summer, he/she may need to attend another nearby campus during the summer to gain access.
- BSC Programming
- For students with significant behavioral challenges who typically receive instruction in our behavioral settings, we are developing cluster programs that will provide thematically driven activities and enrichment focused on general skill development, social skills, interpersonal interactions, self-regulation, communication, and fun.
- If a student’s current campus does not have the program during the summer, he/she may need to attend another nearby campus during the summer to gain access.
- ECSE Programming
- For students who are eligible for the Early Childhood Special Education programs, the summer intersession opportunity may include inclusion in a general education EC classroom or in a self-contained setting, depending on the level of support that a student typically receives.
- If a student’s current campus does not have the program during the summer, he/she may need to attend another nearby campus during the summer to gain access.
- Algebra I JumpStart
- Designed to support students who may be un- or under prepared for success in Algebra I & the corresponding EOC, this program will focus on proactive vocabulary development, vertically aligned algebra skills, and confidence building. This course is intended for incoming 9th graders with disabilities .
- At campus discretion, 9th graders who previously were unsuccessful in Algebra I/EOC may also participate. This course can be taught by a special education teacher or a general education teacher. It may even be co-taught, if the campus chooses to do so. Ideally, these classes will serve 5-15 students per class.
