Happy March!
Happy March 6th grade families! We have had great first few months of 2023 and we are excited for the rest of the school year! We have gone on a couple field trips, participated in extracurricular activities, and demonstrated our academic excellence in the building. We also just finished Trimester 2 of our academic year. Keep up the awesome work!
Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support your student in this new year!
This month we will continue to be working on our core values of:
- Resilience
- Respect
- Curiosity
- Leadership
Ask your student to explain what these core values mean to them and how they can practice them at school!

Classroom Updates
English Language Arts (ELA)- Ms. Furst
We have just finished our unit on Greek Mythology. We completed a Quest on Amplify where students had to free the different Greek gods by reading about them and answering questions to unlock them. We discussed how to find a theme in a short story, symbolism, and using text evidence to support a response. We continued to practice using the RACE model in our writing and explaining our answers.
Students are now starting their next unit on the book, Summer of the Mariposas. This story is about five sisters who find a dead body in the Rio Grande river in Texas. The sisters go on a quest to take the body to Mexico. They face many challenges, such as an evil witch and a wild chupacabras. Thankfully, they have help from La Llorona, a legendary figure from Mexican folklore. Throughout this unit students will focus on tracking the characters development throughout the story and what it takes to be a brave leader.
At home we are highly encouraging that students:
- Read for at least 30 minutes a night- students can get books from the library, ask me, or see Schoology for more ideas for how to get books.
- Practice on Lexia Power Up- students can access through Clever
- Read articles or the news and discuss it with people at home
- Ask Ms. Furst for more specific ideas for your student!
Math- Ms. Pearson
Since coming back from mid-winter break, our 6th grade math class has been working on the 6th unit, Expressions and Equations. In this unit students will be introduced to variables for the first time in math and solve equations such as 12=x+6 and 15=3x. Students will also learn to understand and use the terms “coefficient,” “solution,” “equivalent expressions,” “exponent,” “independent variable,” and “dependent variable.” In the last section of the unit, students represent collections of equivalent ratios as equations. They will use and make connections between tables, graphs, and linear equations that represent the same relationships.
In the accelerated math class, students are finishing up their 5th unit. In the second half of the unit students extend their knowledge of circles and geometric measurement, applying their knowledge of proportional relationships to the study of circles. They also extend their earlier work with perimeters of polygons to circumferences of circles, and recognize that the circumference of a circle is proportional to its diameter, with constant of proportionality π. They encounter informal derivations of the relationship between area, circumference, and radius.
The next test for both general education and accelerated will be on March 21st. I will send out another message a week before the exam to remind families.
Science/Social Studies- Mr. Herb
Since coming back from winter break students have finished their Social Studies Unit on Africa. During this time your students completed two independent projects. Students practiced their writing and research skills as well as working on self-advocacy and personal responsibility. It was an absolute pleasure to see what students can accomplish.
Starting Monday March 6th we began our 3rd Science Unit. Students will study the reproduction, growth and development of living things. Students will continue to gather data through experimentation and scientific modeling. We will have a strong emphasis on connecting their math skills to science. As always, encourage your students to engage in productive struggle, advocate for themselves and never give up!
