Partnering with parents to create lifelong learners
Septemeber 1, 2017 Issue 1
Dyer Families,
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! It has been wonderful to meet all of our new students and families, as well as welcome all of those returning to us! We currently have 310 students, with 17 different 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms. Excitement is in the air as school begins to take on the form of our new year. Students are settling into their classrooms, and learning is already in full swing!
With the start of a new year comes many opportunities to get involved in your child's education. Parent/Teacher conferences will be taking place in the next few weeks. This will be an excellent way for you to do a beginning of year check-in on your child's progress, learn more about the teacher's expectations, and ask any personal questions related to your child's education. Please take advantage of this opportunity when the teachers begin to send their sign-ups home. At the end of last year, our campus was awarded a grant from the Krum Education Foundation that is going to allow us to implement what we are calling a Tinker Yard on our playground. In order for this to happen, it has taken efforts from our KISD administration team, the Krum Education Foundation, our incredible maintenance department, teachers, and students. Of course we want to solicit your support as well! Please join us on September 30th from 3:00-7:00pm. We will provide a free hot dog supper from 5:00-6:00pm for all who come out to help. If you would like more information, please check out the link below. We would love to speak to you if you have questions about it. Additionally, we will have our WatchD.O.G.S kick-off, and Grandparent's Week as well this month! There are many opportunities to be involved. We hope to see you here very soon!
As I mentioned already, we are thrilled to be starting this year off with you! We recognize and appreciate how your involvement directly impacts your child’s education, and we are excited to work closely with you.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns!
Very sincerely,
Mrs. Boone

TINKER YARD
Thanks to the Krum Education Foundation's funding of our "Tinkering with the TEKS" grant, Hattie Dyer Elementary's existing playground equipment will be enhanced using storage units, basic building materials, and common household items to revolutionize our playground into an outdoor Tinker yard complete with a variety of outdoor learning centers. This project will simultaneously provide real world math, science, ELA, art, music, engineering, and problem-solving interactions, while allowing students the freedom and thrill of exploring together outside. Teachers and students will step into a tinkering wonderland when they frequent the outdoor learning area/playground.
We will be adding an Outdoor Instructional Space, Reading Garden, Math Station, Engineering Space, Art Area, Weather Monitoring Station, a Music Area and so much more!

Attendance Policy
As referenced in the 2017-18 Student Handbook. Page 21.
Arriving late or leaving early is considered a part of the day: 4 or more tardies or picking your child up before dismissal time will exempt a student from perfect attendance awards/rewards and time may be required to be made up during summer school.
Doctor and Dental Appointments: Absences for appointments with doctors, dentists, orthodontists, physical therapists, and other health care professionals will be classified as excused absences if the student returns to school on the same day as the appointment and presents a note from the health care provider stating the time of the appointment and the time the student left the doctor’s office. If the appointment is at the end of the school day and the student has been at school all day up to that time, the absence will be excused if the student brings a note from the health care provider the following day.
Volunteer application available online
Apply to volunteer at your child’s campus by submitting an online application. The process is easy and takes just a few minutes. Simply go to https://krumisd.quickapp.pro/ to fill out the form. You can also access to application at www.krumisd.net, select “Parents” and click on the “Volunteer” link. Remember, volunteers must submit an application every year to continue volunteering. Applicants who have questions may call (940) 482-2501 or contact their child’s campus.
REMINDER!!
If you ever need to change the way your child gets home, you MUST send a note to school or call the office BEFORE 2:30pm to ensure we are able to get the information to your child’s teacher (we WILL NOT take your child’s word on transportation changes). If you email your child’s teacher, please CC the office staff also about transportation changes. On most days the teachers are only able to check their emails on their conference periods.
Sending a note is preferably the best way to communicate with your child's teacher.

Coach’s Corner with Coach Alexander lacey.alexander@krumisd.net
Welcome to Physical Education!
Hello! My name is Coach Alexander and this is my 8th year at Dyer Elementary. I am excited to be at Dyer and to be able to teach your children to explore their opportunities and help them create moments of success.
I have a few procedures in place that protect your children from accidents.
Shoes! I require your children to have P.E. shoes, everyday. You can keep spare shoes in their lockers, or send them with a change of shoes for P.E. time. Points are deducted from their grade if your child has on improper shoes, because I do not allow them to participate. Thank you for your cooperation.
Label! Please label all jackets and coats. Sometimes personal belongings are left behind, and when labeled, can be returned to the rightful owner.
Practice! We perform sit-ups and push-ups, everyday. When your children practice on their own time, it helps train their brain about muscle memory and proper mechanics for these fitness activities.
Notes! If your child is sick or not feeling well, please send a note for them to be excused from P.E. activities. If your child does not have a note excusing them from P.E., and they do not participate, points will be deducted from their daily grade.
Attention Girls! Girls who wear dresses or skirts to school are required to have shorts underneath their clothes to be able to participate.
P.E.A.C.E.!
Protect PE Equipment
Enter & Exit Quietly
Attention: Follow Directions the First Time
Cooperation: Work Well With Others
Esteem: Respect Each Other
Consequences:
Strike 1: 10 push-ups
Strike 2: Timeout & -10 points
Strike 3: Alternate Assignment
We are having a great time and I have had a blast getting to know your children! It’s always a great day in P.E.
Mrs. Cayce's Computer Class sharon.cayce@krumisd.net
All students have their usernames and passwords and will need to learn this information to be able to log into the computers at school. 2nd grade has a new username and password to learn this year, it is a little different from what they used last year. They will have to know their legal name as it is on their birth certificate. If this is not the name they go by daily they may need your help to learn it and how to spell it. The faster they get logged on the more time they have to work.
At home, they can go to my Webpage to find things to work on. I have links on my page that are educational activities to help reinforce what they are doing at school. To get to my page 3rd grade can go to bit.ly/scayce3, 2nd grade can go to bit.ly/scayce2 . Until we learn how to logon to Google so we can add this page to our bookmark bar we are typing this frequently, they should be able to do it. You can put it on your bookmark bar so they can get to it easily.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to e-mail me sharon.cayce@krumisd.net.

Notes from the Music Room with Mrs. Lujan
The school year is off to a great start in music! This month we will get the opportunity to play some drums and mallet instruments that we are borrowing for several weeks. We will also be learning about beat and rhythm, some new musical terms, and will be learning to read music by both singing, and playing some very fun instruments. As our musical knowledge grows, we will be able to play games that test our new skills! For each class I choose one student who was respectful and participating well to be our Marvelous Musician. This student gets to play on the electronic drum set, and I'm hoping each and every student works hard in order to earn this honor!
Email is the best way to contact me. Feel free to do so at kami.lujan@krumisd.net
Reminders from the Nurse’s Corner with Mrs. Craddock, RN dana.craddock@krumisd.net
Back to School Checklist
Parents, here is a checklist that not only applies to the first day of school but can be referred to throughout the school year.
Keep vaccinations current and provide the school nurse a copy of the immunization record.
- Notify the school nurse and your child’s teacher of any health issues and/or medications your child takes.
- Keep your contact information current with the school. If you change your phone number or address notify the school immediately. Please do not rely on your student to remember the new information.
- Send a change of clothes for your student because accidents happen! Whether it is spilled milk or mud puddles students are in my office daily needing a change of clothes.
Thank you,
Dana Craddock, RN
Reading Tips for Parents By Dawn Schertz & Sarah Tudor dawn.schertz@krumisd.net or sarah.tudor@krumisd.net
Reading is the process of constructing meaning from written texts. Reading involves thinking, decision making, and problem solving. The goal for a skilled reader is to determine the fluency (the ability to read texts accurately, quickly, and with expression), comprehension (the ability to read text and to understand its meaning), and motivation to read (a state of desire or eagerness).
Pictures are important!
Pictures provide the reader with important information from the story. PLEASE allow your child to use the pictures to help him/her solve new words and gain meaning of text.
Reading is fun!
Make reading fun, and your child will want to read over and over again. Find a place that is comfortable and has little distractions. Set aside a time to read, whether it is after school, before dinner, on the way to baseball practice, or before bed.
READ EVERY DAY!!!
Math Mania with Mrs. Hurlbut brenda.hurlbut@krumisd.net
As a parent, you can help your child be a whiz at math, even if it wasn’t your best subject. Here are Tips for Parents on how:
Be positive about math. Express confidence in your child’s ability to do math. Don’t stress either your own fear of math or how difficult math is or how much you admire anyone who can do math. Remember, everyone can and does use math all the time.
Show your kids math at work in their world. Get your kids used to math by thinking out loud when making calculations. Let them measure when you bake. Ask them to figure out how long of a hose you need to reach from the faucet on the side of the house to the garden. Let your child figure out how many miles you’ll be driving on your next trip by using the information on a map.
Make math a game. Math games are fun and inexpensive. They are a wonderful way to get your kids to enjoy working with numbers, as well as improve their number skills. Many games that we take for granted are excellent math lessons. “Go Fish” teaches counting and grouping in sets. Games that use play money teach how to make change. Board games that use dice teach addition and counting. Backgammon teaches addition, subtraction, and strategy. Play store with the items in your cupboard.
