Partnering with parents to create lifelong learners
Welcome back!
Dyer Families,
Happy New Year and welcome back to the 2nd half of the 2016-17 school year! I hope you all had a wonderfully refreshing break with the ones you love most. We are certainly rejuvenated and ready hit the ground running again at Dyer!
In looking ahead we want to ask our families to be mindful of re-establishing the necessary routines to ensure that your students are in attendance and on time each morning to get each school day off to a great start. In addition to morning routines, we also ask our families to continue to be mindful of early dismissal habits as well. Although there are times when an occasional early dismissal is necessary, these should be minimal as this loss of instructional time can certainly effect a student’s performance. The Spring semester is a bit more challenging and requires the students to flex their academic independence a little more. As always, we appreciate your support as our teachers and students strive to maximize their instructional time shared each day.
As you’re all aware, the upcoming months often bring unpredictable weather. Please be sure that your children are coming to school with the appropriate outdoor attire so that they can enjoy recess when the weather allows for it. We also have a lost and found pile that accumulates quite a bit this time of year. If you find that your child is missing something, please come check it out.
We are looking forward to what 2017 has in store for Dyer Elementary students and teachers!
Happy New Year!

What does Coach A have to say?
I hope everyone a fantastic Holiday Break! A new year has started and will bring new equipment and more fun games to PE. 3rd grade will begin testing for the FitnessGram. The FitnessGram is a standardized test that is conducted in PE. This test measures their level of being physically fit. The results are recorded and then submitted to the state. This test is not taken as a grade for PE. The state says that every student, grades 3-12, must be tested in the FitnessGram to stay compliant with the Healthy Zone Standards. These are the measurements that will be recorded: height, weight, skin-fold measurement, sit and reach, curl-ups, push-ups, trunk lift, and PACER (aerobic capacity). We will begin this test on January 18th and will conclude by February 1st.
We are learning more every day and moving very quickly.
Stay active and healthy!
Cayce's Computer Class
We are looking forward to a great new year and all the possibilities ahead. January is the time for review and we will be reviewing all our skills. We will work in all of the Google packages we have looked at so far this school year: Docs, Slides and Drawing. Most importantly, we will work to improve our typing skills. As always, anything we do in class is on my webpage. Assignments and grading expectations are all there. Your child can work on anything at home as long as they are the one doing the work.

A NOTE from Music
In the meantime, Mrs. Johnson will be teaching Music in her place. We are thrilled to have her here and know that Music class is in the best of hands!
Nurse Dana's Corner
Being active is an important part of staying healthy both physically and mentally. Students remain active through PE and recess at school and it is important to continue physical activity during holiday breaks and summer vacations too. Activities such as going to the park or zoo, hiking, camping, ice skating, bowling or a bike ride after dinner will keep your student healthy and happy!
Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights benefits of physical activity for our children and youth:
Regular physical activity—
· Helps build and maintain healthy bones and muscles.
· Helps reduce the risk of developing obesity and chronic
diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and colon cancer.
· Reduces feelings of depression and anxiety and promotes psychological well-being.
· May help improve students’ academic performance, including
o Academic achievement and grades
o Academic behavior, such as time on task
o Factors that influence academic achievement, such as concentration and attentiveness in the classroom.

School Report Card
Attached you will find a copy of the State of Texas 2013-14 School Report Card for Dyer Elementary. This is a report required by the Texas Legislature and prepared by the Texas Education Agency. It is to be sent to the parent or guardian of every child enrolled in a Texas public school. The report provides information concerning student performance on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), as well as information on student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures.
The information contained in the School Report Card is required by state law and is briefly described in the enclosed “2013-14 School Report Card Definitions.” The report for our school may or may not have all the information described, because the information presented depends on whether the school is an elementary, middle, or high school.
State law requires that the school report card display information about the state, the district, and the school. Where possible, the information must be reported by race/ethnicity and socio-economic status of the students and must include at least two years of results.
The definitions for reference can be found HERE.
Please contact me if you have any questions concerning this report card. Thank you for your continued support of Dyer Elementary!
