May Mitchell
School Counselor
Personal Philosophy
I believe that each child deserves equal education in which they are appreciated and accepted.
I see my role as a counselor, collaborator, advocate, coordinator and agent of change, promoting each child's educational, academic, and career growth.
Emotions Map
Emotion maps help students to explore complex feelings that are difficult to express in other ways.
National Certification
After completing a Master's Degree in counseling education, additional training and experience was completed to achieve National Board Certification for Counselors.
Classroom Lessons
This banner was made by students after a series of lessons were given on community and responsibility. Students identified the school custodian and made links to his work around the school. To show appreciation they made a birthday banner for him.
Lunch Bunch
I provide support during lunch time for students in small groups covering a variety of topics.
"Discussion Table"
This is an example of a group activity using bibliotherapy. A physical copy of the story provides a basis for students to express themselves by writing out responses.
Visual Aids
Visual aids can be really helpful for students. This particular handout assists in communicating. Other handouts include coping strategies, social stories, and behavior charts. This is one of many resources that can be used with students, teachers, and families.
