My Opinion
Simply put, copyright is a way to prevent ideas from being taken from you. Imagine you are a famous painter who has been slaving over his newest piece for years. Your masterpiece is excepted by the masses with cheers of praise and exultation, but alas, just days later you find that $3 prints of your painting are being shipped out online. Without copyright laws, the most you could do would be to mutter and shake your fist at these deviants, which are often hollow threats over the internet. However, with copyright laws on your side, you can prevent previously mentioned deviants from stealing your artwork, and perhaps even regain some of your lost profit. In a world that is filled with swindlers and thieves, copyright preserves just a bit of justice.
