April is School Library Month and The Wave is Ready to Celebrate!
The Wave is already a robust library with both print and digital platforms providing our students the opportunity to read and research. The theme for this year's School Library Month is "Everyone Belongs." The Wave welcomes everyone and strives to provide the information each patron requires. "Everyone Belongs" also applies to the content formats in the Wave. No matter how you ingest a story or information, if it's a print book, ebook, audiobook or graphic novel, it counts as reading! We are pleased to inform you of the new additions arriving at the Wave this Spring.
SORA (School Overdrive Reading App) surfed to the Wave in February and in just two months a 40% increase in checkouts occurred. The SORA app is student friendly and available for both ios and android devices in the app stores. Students can also access SORA on any browser at www.soraapp.com. Over 10,000 ebooks and audiobooks are available from our school library upon opening the app. Students can earn badges as they complete reading challenges. Sora is an incredible tool for helping students access academic content and reading for pleasure.
The Wave is approaching our third "Overdrive" anniversary with over 16,000 checkouts so far. Overdrive continues to prove that "Everyone Belongs". As part of School Library Month, patrons of the Wave who download SORA and check out a book this April, will earn a chance to win a New Samsung Chromebook from Overdrive. All Ebooks, Audiobooks and Graphic Novels count as entries in the Wave's School Library Month Contest.
Speaking of Graphic Novels, Overdrive just announced a new agreement with Marvel Comics. Overdrive has access to both DC and Marvel libraries now. The Wave has also partnered with the Junior Library Guild and Follett to acquire Graphic Novels for multiple genres in print format including The Diary of Anne Frank, Speak, and Game of Thrones. Graphic Novels, like Audiobooks, help struggling readers access a love for reading. Everyone Belongs!
This April, the Wave was able to add Science, a journal by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a leading outlet for scientific news, commentary, and cutting-edge research. Through its print and online incarnations, Science reaches an estimated worldwide readership of more than one million. Science’s authorship is global too, and its articles consistently rank among the world's most cited research. Cypress Bay students and staff can access Science by clicking on the link from cypressbaymedia.com.
Flipster is growing this May! Last year we added 20 digital magazines including Time, Newsweek and Espn. Starting May 1st, students and staff will have access to 30 digital magazines including People and USNEWS College Reports. Current issues and back issues are available and may be read in any browser or through the Flipster app. Articles may also be saved and printed when needed. To access Flipster, click on the link at Cypressbaymedia.com and log in. For log in username and password please visit the Wave.
Finally, we wanted to welcome Ms. Evelyn Gonzalez to the Wave. Evelyn will be at the circulation desk supporting our school ID process and assisting students and staff with their media center needs.
Have a Happy School Library Month and thanks for "Checking Out" the Wave, Surf's Up!
