Stress, Fatigue Are Major Farm Safety Risk Factors
By: Jim Salfer, Extension Educator-Dairy, University of Minnesota
It's hard to believe but harvest time is here. During this time of year is when most farm accidents happen. Stress and fatigue are major factors in making farming the country's second most hazardous occupation. Farming ranks second on the list of hazardous occupations compiled by the National Safety Council. So far this year at least two persons have lost major limbs due to farming accidents and most years someone is killed in an accident. Continue....

Cold Weather Calf Care
By: Ryan Breuer, DVM, Iowa State University, NW Dairy Field Specialist
Fall weather brings warm days, but cool nights. Set up a cold weather calf care plan now! As temperatures drop, steps must be taken to provide increased energy to growing calves. When temperatures drop to less than 60 degrees, a calf is below its "thermal neutral zone". The thermal neutral zone is the temperature range [60-75oF] where a calf does not need to spend extra energy to stay warm or cool itself. Therefore, in cold weather, calves must be supplied more calories or they will use their energy to keep warm instead of for growth. Continue.....

Dairy Focus: Managing Feed Refusals
By: JW Schroeder, NSDU Extension Dairy Specialist
To ensure constant feed availability and account for feed refusal or weigh back, you must deliver more feed to a pen of dairy cows than those cows will consume. Common recommendations in dairy circles indicate producers should expect 2 to 5 percent feed refusal or weigh back.
Efficiency in feed bunk management suggests the lower the refusal, the better, at least from an economical perspective. After all, the feedlot industry has done it successfully for years. And, when you consider the lactating cows easily will consume 50 pounds of dry matter, if you have 5 percent refusal, you are going to have to offer the cow 52.5 pounds of dry matter per day. A 5 percent refusal is equal to 2.5 pounds (50 x 0.05). Continue....
