From the Desk of Principal Vance
Happy International Women's Day! Spring is in the air and with it come longer and, hopefully, sunnier days. At WSHS, the energy is high. Our What's Up Westside newsletter is bursting with updates on all the amazing happenings around campus.
A huge shoutout to the incredible individuals who contribute to our newsletter, and a special thank you to Janel Lardizabal for weaving it all together each week. Your dedication is truly appreciated!
As we dive into the season of growth and renewal, we are also tackling some big projects, including the development of next year's budget. While there are challenges ahead with potential reductions in funding, we remain positive. We are anticipating an increase in enrollment, which will help offset some of these reductions. Our current budget draft allows us to maintain our current staffing levels, but may result in an increase in class size.
Our winter sports teams wrapped up their season with flying colors, and now it's time to cheer on our spring athletes as they hit the fields and courts. Plus, get ready for a dazzling performance of "Mean Girls" at the end of the month, and mark your calendars for the toe-tapping Big Band Dinner Dance.
I'd also like to extend a personal invitation to our upcoming Multi-cultural Night Celebration on Friday, March 22. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our diverse community and embrace the richness of our cultural tapestry.
Remember, our strength lies in our unity as a community. Let's keep that spirit alive by staying engaged in our students' lives and remaining active participants in our school community. Together, we can accomplish anything. Here's to a fantastic spring ahead! Go, Wildcats!

WSHS Spring Testing Schedule
All students in grade 10 are required to take the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA). All students in grade 11 are required to take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). A parent or guardian may opt out a student by submitting a Refusal Request. Students who do not participate will receive a “zero” score on the assessment and be considered non-proficient. This may impact the student's future class choices.
- April 1–5: SBA ELA (all grade 10 students)
May 20–22 & May 28–30: SBA Math (all grade 10 students and grade 11 students in Algebra II and Geometry)
May–June: WCAS (all grade 11 students in Science class, dates TBD)
Smarter Balanced Assessments
All Students are required to meet State Standards in English Language and Math to earn a diploma. The most efficient way to demonstrate proficiency is by taking and passing the state exams given to students in the spring of their sophomore year.
Students must bring a district issued laptop; WSHS will provide headphones and test tickets. The SBA Assessment is untimed (ELA averages 3–4 hours and Math averages 2–3). SBA Assessments are divided into two sections:
- CAT (computer adaptive test) 20 items
PT (performance task)
- Segment one: Short answer or constructed response
- Segment two: Longer writing task associated with the same articles/sources
Items prohibited during test sessions:
- Backpacks/bags, cell phones, AirPods/earbuds, smart watches, other electronics
