Calling ALL Parents for students in grades 7-12!
Your guidance, support, and input is so valuable as your students request courses, consider careers, and make plans for their futures!
These last two Wednesdays during TAP (Teacher Advisor Program) time, students have been exploring various career opportunities. Last week they looked at the Career and Technical Education opportunities available through Blue River Career Programs and this week they used the internet to research career clusters and consider what they can do in junior high or high school as great preparation for their future studies and careers.
Your experiences with choosing careers, courses to take, post- high school experiences are all things that are valuable to share with your child! Take some time this week to have conversations with your students about your experiences AND to learn about what they are interested in as well!
Here are a few questions prompts to help get that conversation started:
- Questions for parents: When you were in junior high or high school, what careers were you interested in?
- How did you decide what you wanted to become or study after high school?
- Who helped you decide or who did you talk to to learn about the different careers and options?
- What courses did you enjoy or not enjoy during junior high or high school?
- Questions for students: What careers were you interested in right now?
- Are there any courses at Blue River Career Programs that you find interesting? Any that might help you with your career choice?
- What kind of education do you think you will want or need after high school to get the career of your dreams? Military? Career/Technical Program or School? 2 or 4 Year College?
We would love to hear about your discussions and experiences! After having conversations with your students, give us some feedback! A few quick questions to hear how it went. Thank you!

You and your child can easily report tips on bullying, harassment, drugs, vandalism, or any safety issue you're concerned about through SafeSchools Alert. Every tip SafeSchools Alert receives about our district is immediately logged in the system and our administration is notified so that they can investigate and take appropriate action. And, tips may also be submitted anonymously if you prefer. Together, using SafeSchools Alert, we can make our district a safer place to work and learn! Thanks in advance for your support!

Send Us Your Spartan Special Moments!
Our community is extremely proud of the many accomplishments and positive stories involving the students, teachers, staff and programs at Southwestern Consolidated Schools of Shelby County that we may not always get to hear. If you would like to have your positive story shared with the Spartan Nation, please send the details to Mrs. Lindsay Chase, Curriculum and Communications Director. We would love to share your positive stories that include personal achievements of your child such as serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, earning awards or recognition in 4-H, earning badges in Girl Scouts, etc, etc. You may just see your story in a future edition of "The Spartan Special" or in The Shelbyville News! We want to celebrate our Spartans. You can't hide that Spartan pride!
