The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - October 30, 2022
A Note from Ms. Welch
Welcome to the final week of the 1st Quarter and the final day of October. The weather has certainly shifted to welcome fall and just before we turn BACK our clocks one hour next Sunday, 11/6. As the weather becomes wetter and cooler, do remember a coat for your student each day. If you happen to be missing a coat for your student, I also recommend you check the lost-and-found. The rack is full and we also have some coats lying on the bottom, as well.
I want to share a thank you to those parents who signed up to bring in soups or salads this past Friday for the staff to enjoy. The staff room was so cozy and the food was delicious! What a treat for all staff to enjoy. Thank you!
It was so fun to also see so many families come to enjoy the PTA Monster Mash this past Friday evening, as well. As we bring back more of our school-wide celebrations, it feels like we are certainly turning more pages to resume practices from years prior. It was fun to see students enjoying the bouncy houses, Bingo, treats, and dancing with the DJ. Thank you to the PTA for providing this fun opportunity for our families and Thank You to all the volunteers!
The newsletter below provides important information for you to read through, including information for our upcoming Veteran's Day assembly and dates and times of our Elementary Conferences, which also means we have an earlier release time than normal. Please read below to find that information and please mark your calendars now.
I would like to also share we will be welcoming the Northshore School Board and other important Administrators to Cottage Lake on the morning of November 1. The time at Cottage Lake will include a presentation about our students, staff, and school, classroom visitations, and a Round Table conversation with a group of our Sailor students. I am looking forward to showcasing our incredible school and sharing many of the aspects that make our school exceptional.
For those families who celebrate, Happy Halloween. May everyone stay dry and safe during all your festivities. We do ask that candy coming to school stays at a MINIMUM! This can be very disruptive to the learning of our students and with a high intake of sugar, most students' energy crashes shortly after, which means their learning can be impacted. Thank you for your support.
The next family newsletter will be sent out on Sunday, November 13.
Take Care,
~ Jen Welch, Principal

•• New & Important Information ••
Veteran's Day concert
An Invitation From Mrs. Hanning, Cottage Lake’s Music Specialist:
On Tuesday, the 8th of November, we will be honoring our Community’s and Country’s Veterans and active military personnel with an all-school Veterans Day performance and assembly beginning at 2:50 PM in the gym. Families and Veterans are invited to attend!
Our 2nd and 3rd-grade students will be performing beautiful and meaningful patriotic songs to honor and show respect for our Veterans. The program will encompass singing in unison, harmony and round, choral readings, as well as dancing and solo speaking parts.
Cottage Lake students and families are all welcome and highly encouraged to extend an invite to any Veterans or active military personnel that you know to join us. We would like to have as many guest Veterans as we can get to share this experience with us!
A small reception will be held immediately following the assembly for our Veterans in attendance.
End of Quarter 1
Please do remember how important on-time and daily attendance is! We are setting habits of life for our students and students being at school and on-time sets each learner up for success in their learning.
If you are facing barriers that you feel the school could assist with, do reach out.
Thank you for your partnership!
Elementary Conferences
Please note that our Elementary Conferences run from Thursday, November 17 to Wednesday, November 23. On these Elementary Conferences dates, we will have an adjusted release time. On these dates (November 17, 18, 21, 22, and 23), students are released at 12:40 PM. Lunch will be served on these days and all students will have lunchtime at school.
***PLEASE NOTE.... Wednesday, November 16 is a traditional "Early Release Wednesday," with our dismissal continuing to be at 2:30 PM.
If you have not yet signed up for a conference with your student's teacher(s), please do so ASAP. Staff have sent out sign-ups for families via email and these have also been included in their classroom newsletters to you. If you are not received information, please reach out to the office and we can work with the classroom staff to schedule the conference. I would like to see 100% of our families participating in these fall conferences.
A Note from the Nurse
Is it a Cold? or COVID? ... it doesn't matter! Please stay home!
Cold and allergy symptoms can be indistinguishable from COVID-like symptoms. Please keep your students home when they are ill with any symptoms.
COVID testing with a negative result is required before returning to school for all students, staff, and volunteers having any symptom(s).

COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past two weeks, there have been a total of 2 confirmed cases at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

Art Docent Volunteers Needed
Dear Cottage Lake Families
Help bring art to your student’s classroom as an Art Docent volunteer. We are in search of volunteers to assist or lead art lessons in classrooms. Help on an intermittently drop-in basis is also welcomed. Projects like clay and fused glass can only be offered to students if we have enough volunteers to support these lessons. No art background needed. Pre-made lessons are available. Coordinators will train and guide you. Please contact Buffy and Venece if you are able to help. artdocent@cottagelakepta.org.
Time requirement: 1 art lesson per month or low commitment drop in-basis
Thank you,
Buffy and Venece (Art Docent coordinators)
Volunteer Training
Welcoming volunteers into our school is an important part of our work to support our students. There are a few requirements our volunteers must follow.
- Yearly complete a new background check form
- All volunteers must complete a volunteer training with Ms. Welch, Principal
- All volunteers must be fully vaccinated.
If you have already attended a volunteer training with Ms. Welch, you do not need to attend another training. If you are new to Cottage Lake or you have not attended this training, we ask that you please attend the training before you volunteer at Cottage Lake. This training shares common information to all adults in our school and shares expectations as you work in classrooms or other supports around the school.
You do not need to register for the training. You can just show up. Below are the times we have scheduled volunteer training so far this school year. If there is not a time that works for you, please call the front office to find another time.
Volunteer trainings are scheduled for:
- November 7 @ 11:30 AM

PTA Reflections
PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity. Students of all grades and abilities may participate by submitting original pieces of work in 6 categories (Dance, Musical Composition, Visual Arts, Film, Literature and Photography) against the theme of "Show Your Voice!"
Students will create their work of art AND write a short artist statement. Judging is based on both the artwork and artist statement.
Our PTA can send 20 Reflections art pieces plus 6 Special Artist submissions to Northshore Council PTSA in December. Those students' works of art will be celebrated at a districtwide showcase in January. Council will judge the pieces in each category and some pieces will continue onto State PTA and National PTA for further judging. Regardless of where a student places, our PTA will celebrate any student artist who submits a piece of art for Reflections.
For more information and student packets (rules and forms) go to http://www.northshorecouncilptsa.org/reflections.html (make sure you scroll down the page to see the student packet links in each category).
Pieces are due to Buffy Anson no later than November 18th by midnight.
For any questions, please contact Buffy at buffyanson@yahoo.com
