Welcome to the MTE Library!
...a place to explore, engage, and empower.
Dear Milton Terrace Families,
Hi there! I am Sheila McIntyre, and I am the School Librarian at Milton Terrace. I look forward to sharing my love of reading and children's literature, wondering and questioning, and searching for answers...in just the right place/source.
Our first trimester has been full of getting to know one another, exploring, learning, and of course, reading! If you ever have any questions regarding your student's library class, books that have been borrowed, book suggestions, or anything else, please feel free to reach out. I have enjoyed catching up with and getting to know your children over the last few months of school and am looking forward to what the year has in store for us!

Mission and Vision
In the Milton Terrace Elementary School Library, students and staff will have the ability and freedom to engage, explore, and empower themselves and others in a safe and brave space.
What will your student do during library this year???
Grade Level Focus at the Beginning of the Year:
Kindergarten: Creating a community of kindness and respect, author studies (Ryan T. Higgins, Kate Messner), parts of and care of a book, "pausing for people" (learning why and how to pause when using electronics and pay attention to the people around us), and noticing and wondering.
1st Grade: Creating a community of kindness and respect where we all belong, learning how picture books are organized in the library and how to locate them, mapping out a story, and wondering.
2nd Grade: Creating a community of kindness and respect where we all belong, identifying the main idea of a story and key details that support it, understanding the different types of online communities and how we communicate appropriately within those communities.
3rd Grade: Creating a community of kindness and respect where we all belong, using keywords to narrow our search for information, understanding the norms of different online communities and how to be Be Safe, Respectful, Responsible, and Helpful while online, creating a class Digital Citizenship Pledge, exploring and enjoying Sora - not sure what that is? Ask your student!
4th Grade: Creating a community of kindness and respect where we all belong, exploring all of the resources found on Library.fyi (in the Library Resources folder on the Scotties Dashboard), using keywords to narrow our search for information, understanding media and what media balance is (we even tracked our media use for lively discussions!), using new learning, critical thinking skills, and team work to break the code for a BreakoutEDU activity focused on being aware and safe while using apps.
5th Grade: Creating a community of kindness and respect where everyone belongs, understanding the difference between in real life (IRL) friendships and online friendships, creating tips to share with the MTE Community regarding online friendships and safety, becoming Digital Detectives when engaging with and evaluating information found online.

The library is open to all students and staff during school hours. If your student would like to select/exchange books, this can be done on any school day - with the permission of their classroom teacher.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade students may borrow 1 book per library class. Should they forget their book on "Library Day", they may still borrow a book.
2nd -5th Grade students may borrow 2 books per library class. Should they forget their books on "Library Day", they may still borrow 1-2 books.
We encourage all students to enjoy their books and remember to return them when they are finished enjoying them.
Happy reading!
