The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - October 16, 2022
A Note from Ms. Welch
I hope you have all enjoyed this weekend's beautiful weather. It is hard to believe we are in the middle of October and temperatures are in the 80s! It looks like we are in for a change towards the end of this coming week. I will personally take the sun any day, but I'm looking forward to some rain to help clean our air a bit and to also provide relief to the fires that are still burning.
Below you will find many items of importance. I ask that you read through the sections to inform yourself. Here are a few items of importance:
- We still need more volunteers for the Vision and Hearing screening on October 24.
- CL will participate in the Shake Out earthquake drill this Thursday, October 20.
- Picture re-takes are October 27
- Our Veteran's Day assembly will be held on November 8.
- How does CL determine air quality and when students need to stay inside for recess?
- Highlighting our CL Superstars!!
Our PTA has also shared several items of importance below. A few of those items include:
- Staff appreciation luncheon sign-ups
- PTA Reflections information
- We are still looking for Art Docents to keep this program alive at CL.
Thank you for continuing to support our school. As a note, the next community newsletter will be sent out on Sunday, October 30.
Take Care,
~ Jen Welch, Principal

Veteran's Day concert
An Invitation From Mrs. Hanning, Cottage Lake’s Music Specialist:
On Tuesday, the 8th of November, we will be honoring our Community’s and Country’s Veterans and active military personnel with an all school Veterans Day performance and assembly beginning at 2:50 pm in the gym. We hope to see you there!
The 2nd and 3rd grade students will be performing beautiful and meaningful Patriotic songs to honor and show respect for our Veterans. The program will encompass singing in unison, harmony and round, choral readings, as well as dancing and solo speaking parts.
Cottage Lake students and families are all welcomed and highly encouraged to extend an invite to any Veterans or active military personnel that you know to join us. We would like to have as many guest Veterans as we can get to share this experience with us!
Thank you,
Mrs. Hanning
Volunteer CPR Instructor

Air Quality decisions
Given the recent air quality issues due to wildfire smoke, the District wanted to provide background and resources to clarify how decisions are made related to outdoor activities for our students. Student and staff safety are our top priority as we remain diligent in ensuring a safe learning environment for all of our students.
While it is highly unlikely the District would cancel classes or school for air quality, decisions about outdoor recess, other outdoor activities, and outdoor sports are based on the Department of Health (DOH) air quality index (AQI) levels and guidance. Recently, the DOH made a change that impacts athletic practices and competitions. Athletic practices and competition events are not allowed once the local AQI exceeds 100. Outdoor recess is not allowed when the AQI exceeds 150.
Conditions change quickly and are widely variable across the District, and schools have the authority to keep students inside if they feel it is wise. Throughout the day we monitor the air quality in Cottage Lake by using hyperlocal data on airnow.gov.
Thank you for your understanding as we continue to monitor the effects our local air quality is having on our school communities.

COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past two weeks, there have been a total of 0 confirmed cases at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

Art Docent Volunteers Needed
Dear Cottage Lake Families
Help bring art to your student’s classroom as an Art Docent volunteer. We are in search of volunteers to assist or lead art lessons in classrooms. Help on an intermittently drop-in basis is also welcomed. Projects like clay and fused glass can only be offered to students if we have enough volunteers to support these lessons. No art background needed. Pre-made lessons are available. Coordinators will train and guide you. Please contact Buffy and Venece if you are able to help. artdocent@cottagelakepta.org.
Time requirement: 1 art lesson per month or low commitment drop in-basis
Thank you,
Buffy and Venece (Art Docent coordinators)
Harvest parties
Our PTA is hosting a Harvest and Halloween celebration, The Monster Mash, on Friday, October 28. This will be a fabulous opportunity for your student(s) to come to school and wear their costume, should they want to. More information will be shared in the next newsletter regarding the PTA event.
Volunteer Training
Welcoming volunteers into our school is an important part of our work to support our students. There are a few requirements our volunteers must follow.
- Yearly complete a new background check form
- All volunteers must complete a volunteer training with Ms. Welch, Principal
- All volunteers must be fully vaccinated.
If you have already attended a volunteer training with Ms. Welch, you do not need to attend another training. If you are new to Cottage Lake or you have not attended this training, we ask that you please attend the training before you volunteer at Cottage Lake. This training shares common information to all adults in our school and shares expectations as you work in classrooms or other supports around the school.
You do not need to register for the training. You can just show up. Below are the times we have scheduled volunteer training so far this school year. If there is not a time that works for you, please call the front office to find another time.
Volunteer trainings are scheduled for:
- October 20 @ 3:30 PM - UPDATED date!
- October 21 @ 10:00 AM
- October 26 @ 12:00 PM

PTA Reflections
PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity. Students of all grades and abilities may participate by submitting original pieces of work in 6 categories (Dance, Musical Composition, Visual Arts, Film, Literature and Photography) against the theme of "Show Your Voice!"
Students will create their work of art AND write a short artist statement. Judging is based on both the artwork and artist statement.
Our PTA can send 20 Reflections art pieces plus 6 Special Artist submissions to Northshore Council PTSA in December. Those students' works of art will be celebrated at a districtwide showcase in January. Council will judge the pieces in each category and some pieces will continue onto State PTA and National PTA for further judging. Regardless of where a student places, our PTA will celebrate any student artist who submits a piece of art for Reflections.
For more information and student packets (rules and forms) go to http://www.northshorecouncilptsa.org/reflections.html (make sure you scroll down the page to see the student packet links in each category).
Pieces are due to Buffy Anson no later than November 18th by midnight.
