Partnering with parents to create lifelong learners
October 2, 2017 Issue 2
Dyer Families,
Things are definitely in full swing at Dyer! The first grading period is quickly coming to a close, and the first report card will be going home on October 13th. I’m proud to say, with confidence, that your students are receiving their education from the cream of the crop! Students are actively engaged in unique and quality learning experiences at every turn, and my favorite thing to do is step inside those classroom walls to see and hear all that they’re doing.
Parent-teacher conferences are in full swing. I want to thank those of you who have already come in for your conference, and encourage those of you who have not done so yet to make some time to come visit with your child’s teacher. We value our relationship with you almost as much as your child values our relationship! They need to see that we are working together, communicating, and have one shared goal in mind; your child’s overall well-being. This includes social, emotional, academic, and behavioral success. These conferences are a wonderful way to move into the second grading period all on the same page.
October is a busy month for us. We will have several big events toward the end of the month with Red Ribbon Week and fire prevention. We will also have our first H.E.R.O Bash! Remember, H.E.R.O stands for Here- Every day- Ready- On time. We will have one “Bash” per grading period to celebrate students with perfect attendance for each 9 weeks. It is so very important for students to be at school regularly. We want our students looking forward to being at school every day, and we also recognize that it’s not always an easy thing to do.
As always, we are eager to partner with the families of our students. Dyer has many opportunities for you to be involved. I am attaching a list of specific opportunities to this newsletter. Please remember that my door is always open. If I haven’t met you yet, please stop by my office next time you’re around! As always, thank you for trusting us with your very precious children each and every day.
Very sincerely,
Mrs. Boone

Attendance Policy
As referenced in the 2017-18 Student Handbook. Page 21.
Arriving late or leaving early is considered a part of the day: 4 or more tardies or picking your child up before dismissal time will exempt a student from perfect attendance awards/rewards and time may be required to be made up during summer school.
Doctor and Dental Appointments: Absences for appointments with doctors, dentists, orthodontists, physical therapists, and other health care professionals will be classified as excused absences if the student returns to school on the same day as the appointment and presents a note from the health care provider stating the time of the appointment and the time the student left the doctor’s office. If the appointment is at the end of the school day and the student has been at school all day up to that time, the absence will be excused if the student brings a note from the health care provider the following day.
Please Help!!
Volunteer application available online
Apply to volunteer at your child’s campus by submitting an online application. The process is easy and takes just a few minutes. Simply go to https://krumisd.quickapp.pro/ to fill out the form. You can also access to application at www.krumisd.net, select “Parents” and click on the “Volunteer” link. Remember, volunteers must submit an application every year to continue volunteering. Applicants who have questions may call (940) 482-2501 or contact their child’s campus.
REMINDER!!
If you ever need to change the way your child gets home, you MUST send a note to school or call the office BEFORE 2:30pm to ensure we are able to get the information to your child’s teacher (we WILL NOT take your child’s word on transportation changes). If you email your child’s teacher, please CC the office staff also about transportation changes. On most days the teachers are only able to check their emails on their conference periods.
Sending a note is preferably the best way to communicate with your child's teacher.

Fall brings the arrival of cooler temperatures, fun activities, and great events to celebrate.
During this time, the agenda consists of finishing low-organization tagging games and then introducing rhythmic movement, which happens to be one of my favorite units in PE. Rhythmic movement involves so many key points to a child’s learning and utilizing those movements in everyday activities will help their motor skills develop and teach them more control over their bodies. Some of the movements we will learn might be complicated, so we practice them every day. I wouldn’t be surprised if you catch them doing the steps if they hear the song! They love it!
We are learning more everyday and moving very quickly. Stay active and healthy!
Mrs. Cayce's Computer Class sharon.cayce@krumisd.net
All students are now logging on and should be able to explain to you how they logon. There are several programs we are using at school to help the kids become more familiar with using the internet as an educational tool. These programs also help reinforce the skills they are learning in their classroom as well. They are welcomed and encouraged to do these activities at home. The links to these activities can be found on my webpage.
The 2nd grade link is www.krumisd.net/cayce/2
The 3rd grade link is www.krumisd.net/cayce/3
The first time they go to this page, make it a favorite or bookmark, so it is easy for them to return to it the next time.

Keynotes from the Music Room with Mrs. Lujan
In music we have had a great time playing our borrowed drums and various percussion instruments! Now that it is time to give them back, we will be working on new games, and our Veteran's Day song. We have learned about the difference between the beat and the rhythm, and have even learned about melody. All of the 2nd and 3rd grade classes have even begun to learn about how to write rhythms and melodies on the music staff! Many students have been chosen as a Marvelous Musician, and I'm excited for even more students to work hard for this honor.
Email is the best way to contact me. Feel free to do so at kami.lujan@krumisd.net

Should My Child Stay Home Today?
If your child is experiencing any of the symptoms below, staying home is the best choice. Sending your child to school sick not only exposes other children but also delays your child’s healing time.
Please put a change of clothes in your child’s backpack.
On a weekly, sometimes daily basis students need to change clothes during the day due to accidents or spills. Most children prefer to have their own clothes (shirt, shorts/pants, and underwear) to change into rather than use what we have here at school.
The small supply of clothes we had at the beginning of the year is about gone. If your student has borrowed a change of clothes from the office, please launder and return to school.

Fall is finally here, well, on the calendar it’s officially fall. During this time of the year we often find ourselves driving to sports or family events, and these times can provide some great opportunities to help your kids practice math skills. With a pencil, some paper and maybe even a calculator, you can take kids math on the road.
Kids Math During Pit Stops
Create a chart listing the numerals and/or number words from 1 to 100. Look for signs at stores and restaurants which contain number words. For example, "Buy One, Get One Free" or "Ninety-Nine Cent Hamburgers." See who can find the most numbers words or fill their chart first.
Estimate the total cost of a meal by rounding up the cost of each person's meal and adding them together. When the check comes, compare the total to the estimation to see how close it was.
Calculate how much change you should receive when paying for items. See if your child can figure it out before the cashier and have him count the change to confirm it's correct.
License Plate Math
Have each family member look for and choose a license plate and write it down. Remove the non-numerical symbols. Everybody compare numbers and decide whose license plate has the largest number. Extension questions: By how much? What would that number round up to? Round down to? What number is in the tens place? The hundreds? What's the largest place value on the license plate?
Use a simple alpha-numeric substitution code to translate the letters on license plates to numbers. The simplest code to use is that which assigns each letter of the alphabet a digit based on its position in the alphabet. (A=1, B=2, C=3...) Add your license plates to find out whose plate is worth the most.
