Update Emergency Contacts
As we move toward the end of January, I want to remind parents to please update your emergency contacts. Caregivers change, phone numbers change, new jobs happen. Please make sure to let our office know if your emergency contact information has changed. If your child is sick, the emergency contact information is essential.
OPT-In to TEXT MESSAGING SERVICE FOR SCHOOL EMERGENCIES
Please consider opting in so that in the event of an emergency at Oak, we can notify you quickly.
You can participate in this free service just by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our short code number, 67587.
You can also opt-out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with “Stop”.
SchoolMessenger is compliant with the Student Privacy PledgeTM, so you can rest assured that your information is safe and will never be given or sold to anyone.
Oak Avenue School Tours
Have you heard your neighbors talking about wanting to know more about Oak School? Perhaps a new family just moved into the area and they are looking at different school options. Maybe a neighbor has preschool-age children and they are inquiring about Oak School.
Please let families know Oak School is open for tours. Feel free to pass along my email address. I would be happy to set up a time to provide a personal tour and answer questions about the Oak School community. kattell@lasdschools.org

Support our 6th Grade Entrepreneurs
Come to the multi after school on February 13 & 14 for our Sixth Grade Entrepreneurial Fair. Students are working hard on their various products, and are looking forward to selling their wares. They will be donating 10% of their proceeds to the charity voted on by the class.
Our Lifesavers this week are Monica Sidher, Mary Fitzgerald, Clare Luna, Goretti Furtado, and Terra Washington, our school nurses.
As we reach peak flu season, I wanted to take a moment to thank the wonderful people who care for our kids’ scrapes, bruises, bumps, and fevers every day. Thank you for all you do for our kids!
Sincerely,
Sara Payne

The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Kids More Control Over Their Lives
Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020 - 7:00 - 9:00pm
MVHS Spartan Theater
3535 Truman Ave., Mountain View
Evidence strongly suggests that age-appropriate autonomy is vital for young people’s mental health—it helps them to sculpt brains that are resilient, resourceful, and ready to take on new challenges.
When The Self-Driven Child authors Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson began comparing notes years ago, they discovered a common problem among their young clients: kids were feeling acutely stressed. Many complained that they felt powerless to shape their own destinies. Some stumbled in high school, while others hit college and unraveled. Bill is a clinical neuropsychologist who helps kids gripped by anxiety or struggling to learn. Ned is a motivational coach who runs an elite tutoring service. Together they discovered that the best antidote to stress is to give kids a sense of control.
In this talk, Bill and Ned offer a combination of cutting-edge brain science, the latest discoveries in behavioral therapy, and case studies drawn from the thousands of kids they've helped. They advise that parents and educators adopt the role of consultant rather than manager to give kids more responsibility for their own life decisions even before they leave home.
Audience: Parents and educators of students grades 6 - 12.
