Looking for Family Involvement in Anti-bias Literature Work at RNESU
"RNESU is looking for 1-3 teachers from each school to participate in a day of in-house professional learning on Saturday, February 4th at the Brandon Inn.
The day has two components (1) an anti-bias literacy workshop centered on the power of representation in children’s literature and (2) the review and selection of the books that were nominated for RNESU’s grant-funded PK-6 book bundles.
In addition to teachers from each school, we hope to have a group of parents and community members, board members, librarians, students, and staff present for this opportunity. It promises to be an engaging and inspiring session! Lunch and hot cocoa provided!
If you are interested, please email your building principal by December 21st, 2022."

PBIS Morning Meeting: Giving
We had students from various grades come together to participate in our morning meeting about the character trait, giving. On Friday, December 9th, through videos and short skits, students presented the importance of giving kindness, patience, and assistance to others.
Health Update
This letter is to inform you that we have been seeing an increase of respiratory illnesses within our school. We have identified positive cases of influenza (Flu), COVID and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). Symptoms of respiratory diseases can include fever, headache, chills, body/muscle aches, cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, and sore throat. A person may also experience nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Please monitor your child for symptoms of respiratory disease. If your child is sick, they should stay home to prevent the spread of illness to others.
Here are some ways to help keep your family and others healthy during this time:
Stay up to date on vaccinations, including COVID-19 and Flu.
Updated (bivalent) COVID-19 boosters are now available for anyone five years and up, at least two months following the completion of primary or booster vaccination. There are several upcoming walk-in vaccination clinics, both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same visit. Below are some of the upcoming dates. The Department of Health website has an extensive list of clinics in our area.
12/14/2022- Diamond Run Mall 3:00pm-6:00pm
12/16/2022 - Diamond Run Mall 10:00am-1:00pm
12/21/2022 - Diamond Run Mall 3:00pm-6:00pm
1/4/2023 - Diamond Run Mall 3:00pm-6:00pm
1/6/2023 - Diamond Run Mall 10:00am-1:00pm
Test for COVID-19 when symptoms occur.
The school has rapid antigen tests available for students.
Resources and information for COVID-19 testing can be found on the Vermont Department of Health webpage.
Encourage your child to cover any cough and to wash their hands.
Consider masking in indoor spaces, especially if someone you live/spend time with is immunocompromised or is more likely to get very sick.
If you have any additional questions please contact the school health office.

Correction for Lothrop Night at Spartan Arena
Lothrop Night at Spartan Arena is Friday, January 6th. The permission slip gives two dates, but the correct one is Friday, January 6th. Students singing arrive at 6 pm and the game starts at 7 pm.
Do you have some of these?
These are the water bottles that students “borrow” from the health office. If some have found their way to your home, please send them back to school.
Thank you.
Clarity on Footwear for PE
I have noticed communication regarding PE footwear and wanted to clarify after speaking with Mrs. Roy. It is not really any different than last year. She is asking that now that it is winter and boot season, that learners bring a pair of shoes to wear, preferably sneakers, as boots bring in a large amount of salt and debris to the gym. In the past, learners have been able to wear socks for some PE activities, that will no longer be allowed for safety reasons. If kiddos forget their shoes and are wearing their boots during the day, they can borrow a pair of sneakers from the sneaker library or Mrs. Roy will find a way to help clean boots before they walk on the gym floor.
If you have any gently used sneakers that you wish to get rid of, please let us know as the sneaker library is always in need of a refresher.
Independent Reading and Math Facts
Independent reading is one of the best ways to improve the skill of reading, especially in grades 3-6. Once kiddos learn to read, they get better the more they practice. Please encourage your child to read for 10-20 minutes each evening. For learners in Pre-K-2, establishing the practice of reading at night will create a space for independent reading at night in later years.
Learners who are fluent in their math facts, especially multiplication facts are far more likely to be sucessful in math in 3rd grade and beyond. Many of us have few addition facts that we never quite remember, but we can easily count up or down quickly to get the right answer. Multiplication facts are far more involved if using a "count on your fingers" method and as learners move beyond 3rd grade, math becomes hard when there are multiple steps to solving a problem and they are stuck on multiplication facts. Your child's teacher can provide you with ways to practice and where your child is at currently. Good old flash cards from the Dollar Store or even homeade will do the trick.
We appreciate any and all support from home!
