Partnering with parents to create lifelong learners
December 5, 2017 Issue 4
Dear Dyer Families,
It’s hard to believe we’re sending out a December newsletter already. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your families! During this season of thanks and giving, I want to let you all know how very grateful we are for your support and trust as we partner to educate your children. They are treasures!
We will spend the next few weeks wrapping up the first semester of school. Again, I am amazed at how quickly this year is flying by. As this second reporting period comes to a close, there will be a lot going on at Dyer. Amidst end of year assessments that will be going on, we will also be right in the middle of a season of celebration. Regular student attendance is essential throughout the year for children to maximize their learning. Please be sure to help your children get to school regularly and on time. If they are sick, etc., we certainly understand. We want the best for your children and strongly believe that they gain the most from being at school on a daily basis. Thank you for your help and support in this regard.
With Christmas Break just around the corner, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to join us through volunteering or visiting campus. Please know that you are always welcome! It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the busyness of this time of year. My hope for you and yours is that each of you are able to spend quality time with your children, and that your celebrations are safe and full of peace and love.
Very sincerely,
Lindsey Boone

Attendance Policy
As referenced in the 2017-18 Student Handbook. Page 21.
Arriving late or leaving early is considered a part of the day: 4 or more tardies or picking your child up before dismissal time will exempt a student from perfect attendance awards/rewards and time may be required to be made up during summer school.
Doctor and Dental Appointments: Absences for appointments with doctors, dentists, orthodontists, physical therapists, and other health care professionals will be classified as excused absences if the student returns to school on the same day as the appointment and presents a note from the health care provider stating the time of the appointment and the time the student left the doctor’s office. If the appointment is at the end of the school day and the student has been at school all day up to that time, the absence will be excused if the student brings a note from the health care provider the following day.
IMPORTANT!!
Parents please remember to keep all your information updated with the front office. There may be times when we need to get in touch with you. We need a current phone number and address for mailing.

REMINDER!!
If you ever need to change the way your child gets home, you MUST send a note to school or call the office BEFORE 2:30pm to ensure we are able to get the information to your child’s teacher (we WILL NOT take your child’s word on transportation changes). It’s December! This year is flying by so quickly! We have participated in new holiday related stations and listening to our favorite holiday songs while we play. I would like our students to remain active over break. If they choose to participate, they will earn a reward when we return in January. This information will come home soon!
We are learning more everyday and moving very quickly. Stay active and healthy!
Mrs. Cayce's Computer Class * sharon.cayce@krumisd.net
We have spent some time learning how to use Google Drawing and have had so much fun doing so. The kids have done a great job. If you have a chance, ask them show you their drawings.
During our winter break all students are encouraged to get online and earn a green dot in ReflexMath or a blue ribbon in Study Island. I will award a ticket to be dropped into the hopper for every green dot and every blue ribbon earned from December 21 to January 3. If you didn’t know… these are also awarded on Monday for work completed during the weekend.

Congratulations to our 3rd graders who did a fantastic job performing at the Veterans Day event! They did a wonderful job representing Dyer, honoring the veterans, and even sounded good too!
This month students will be reviewing known melodies and rhythms, as well as playing some fun games that will introduce a new rhythm. Students in both 2nd and 3rd will be learning about a new instrument family, the brass family! We've also added a new term to our Word Wall, so ask your student if they can explain or play an ostinato for you!
Email is the best way to contact me. Feel free to do so at kami.lujan@krumisd.net

National Handwashing Awareness Week is December 3-9
Please put a change of clothes in your child’s backpack.
On a weekly, sometimes daily basis students need to change clothes during the day due to accidents or spills. Most children prefer to have their own clothes (shirt, shorts/pants, and underwear) to change into rather than use what we have here at school.
The small supply of clothes we had at the beginning of the year is about gone. If your student has borrowed a change of clothes from the office, please launder and return to school.

UNT Family Intervention Program
Greetings!
Please look over the enclosed information regarding the Couples and Family Intervention Program at the University of North Texas Psychology Clinic. Years ago, I implemented a new doctoral course sequence in couple and family therapy, which adheres to American Psychological Association guidelines set forth by the Committee for Family Specialty. Students receive extensive training in the assessment and treatment of couples and families. Importantly, in the final course, the students practice these skills under live supervision, which allows me to closely monitor their progress and immediately influence the ongoing intervention.
As a required component of the advanced family therapy course, I am able to offer these services to 9 families free of charge. Families must commit to 10 weeks of services beginning the week of February 5th (scheduling starts January 12th) and extending through late April. Psychological testing will take place the first and last sessions for approximately 2-3 hours and can be scheduled at a time convenient to both family and therapist; the remaining eight weeks require only one hour of family therapy on Thursday evenings between 4:00-8:00 p.m. If needed and desired by your school or agency, the treatment plan can include an additional consultation session with the family and your representatives facilitated by the student clinician. At the end of the 10-week intervention, families will also receive a full family assessment report with formal feedback and recommendations. If the family wishes to continue services, they may request transfer as a regular sliding-scale fee client to a new student therapist who will work under my ongoing supervision.
I encourage you to read the enclosed materials and consider the children and families under your care. If you believe any of these families may benefit from our free services and be willing to make the 10-week commitment, please refer them to our program (feel free to make copies of the enclosed flyer). Although the deadline for contact with the family is January 12th, registration is open now and earlier contact is encouraged to ensure the family a place in the program. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Shelley A. Riggs, Ph.D.
