WCAS TESTING FOR JUNIORS
Thursday and Friday of this week, we will be offering the WCAS for all Juniors, in the school library, following the below schedule.
What is the WCAS? The WCAS is the science component of the SBAC testing.
You don't need to pass it, but you do need to take it.
WCAS is for ALL Juniors. This is not an optional assessment.
Juniors will need to bring their district laptop to take the WCAS.
Running Start Students can come during their alpha, or on Friday after lunchtime.

SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY
Please encourage your student to complete the School Climate Survey. The survey asks students to think about their school experience. Students use their school username as the access code and complete the survey on their laptops or smartphone.
The information collected is used to improve our school community. The survey responses are confidential and will not be shared with educators.

CIEE FAMILY NIGHT
Congratulations to the 56 students confirmed to study abroad with a CIEE program this summer! You and your families are invited to our CIEE Family Night on June 15th in the Commons from 7:00-8:00pm. Arrive to check-in by 6:45pm and help yourself to some Pagliacci pizza! You will get to hear from CIEE alum, have a Q&A, and get to meet others traveling to your country and program. Counseling Center Contribution
NEW COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE OFFERINGS
Three new Computer Science classes will be offered in the 2023-24 academic year.
- AP Computer Science AP Computer Science (CS) A1 covers the fundamentals of CS taught in a first-semester college level course. Students will design, write, analyze, and document programs and sub-programs. Students are expected but not required to take the AP Computer Science exam. Prerequisites: Algebra 1. AP CS can be denoted on a student's transcript as a math or science credit additionally student can choose .5 CTE credit with Tech Prep credit options.
- Intro to Programming Computer Science provides students with the skills and knowledge to understand the technology they use daily and to extrapolate this knowledge to understand and use emerging technologies. Content areas include: human interface interaction; problem solving; introduction to programming using Python primarily; and robotics. Students will earn a .5 CTE credit for the course.
- Immersive Media This course is a projects-based class that will concentrate on teaching through activities and projects, culminating in an end of term project. This course starts with some basic game design theory, students will then work through a series of lessons to teach them industry tools (such as Unity) to learn the basics of programming, and then use these tools to create environments, systems and applications in 3D space. Students will learn to find or create and implement 3D models in the environment and code them to interact with users. The course then introduces how immersive technology can be used to put the user in a 3D environment and helps students develop a conceptual understanding of how the immersive system and setup is different from previous 3D experiences. Students will earn a .5 CTE credit for the course.

Teen Link is a program of Crisis Connections that serves youth in Washington State. Teen volunteers are trained to listen to concerns and talk about whatever's is on your teen's mind – bullying, drug and alcohol concerns, relationships, stress, depression or any other issues your teen may be facing.

CELEBRATING A SUCCESSFUL RETURN OF THE WS5K RUN/WALK
A big “thank you” to all of our volunteers and sponsors, and the 1,172 runners and walkers who participated!! We raised $34,000 for the West Seattle High School PTSA, which goes directly back to supporting the academic success and engaged learning of WSHS students!
The freshman class wins the $250 to their ASB and a donut party for most registered participants - way to go class of 2026!

SENIOR CLASS ASB FUNDRAISER

Donations made to the class of 2023 will be used specifically by the senior ASB to help
cover prom and graduation expenses, as well as other senior-specific class activities
(such as Senior Sunset).
Our class was unable to fundraise for all of our sophomore year and half of our junior year due to Covid restrictions, so we really appreciate the generous contributions of parents and community members towards making the end of our time together in high school as wonderful as it can possibly be!
Any surplus funds will be donated to the General ASB account and underclassmen.

We will have a professional DJ, professional photobooth, dessert, and drinks available.
Tickets are $25 w/ an ASB sticker, and $30 without, $35 for guests
Starting May 1st students can purchase tickets online in SchoolPay
May 29th-June 2nd ASB will be available for in-person ticket purchases.
All ticket sales in-person and online stop on June 2nd.
June 5th-9th students who purchased their ticket online MUST pick their
physical ticket up and add their names to the guest list.
All students, regardless of online payment or in-person payment, must
meet in-person to get their physical ticket and get their names and guest
names added to the official guest list.
Each senior is given the opportunity to bring a guest outside of the
graduating class as your date. Guests that are West Seattle
underclassmen will not need a guest pass, but their name must be
included when purchasing a ticket. Any guest, senior or underclassmen,
that doesn’t attend WS will need to complete a guest form PRIOR to
purchasing their ticket.

For the time being yearbook sales are on hold, but we are not fully sold out.
We will have 2 waitlists, one for seniors and one for underclassmen, that you can fill out at this time to reserve your spot in line.
On Tuesday June 20th we will open up in-person sales for seniors on the waitlist first. Those that purchase on the 20th will be able to pick up their yearbooks with the rest of the student body on the 21st at the yearbook distribution event after school. On the 22nd if there are any remaining yearbooks, we will use the waitlist to determine what students will be sold books until we fully sellout. The yearbook company is sending us some extra copies on top of our original order so we are hoping to accommodate as many students as possible.

FREE SELF DEFENSE CLASS
This Friday, May 26th, the Intersectional Feminist Club is hosting a self-defense class after school at Combat Arts Academy!
Free and open to all students regardless of club membership, this class will walk through the basics of self defense and help participants build confidence in their ability to navigate difficult situations.
This class will take place at Combat Arts Academy (5050 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106) from 4:15-5:30pm this Friday. Carpooling will be worked out.

Youth Heritage Project 2023 Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Hanford Site:

All high-school age students are invited to get hands-on with history this summer at the Hanford Site near the Tri-Cities in central Washington!
Learn about efforts to co-steward the stories of the Hanford Site this summer with experiential activities and new friends while giving back to the community through a project proposal at the conclusion of the jam-packed week.

Gatewood Elementary is looking for student volunteers to run the various carnival games/stands at the first ever Gator Fair. The fair is Saturday, June 3rd. They need two shifts of volunteers between 9:30am-3:30pm.
