Cause:
- Faught over tiny islands
- England had a decent relationship with Spain
- Phillip was married to Mary I but wanted to marry Elizabeth
- Elizabeth wanted Protestantism in England which changed marriage plans
- Charles V abdicated in October 1555 and control of Hapsburg possessions was divided
- Charles V nephew (Ferdinads son) Maximilian had been chosen to succeed as a Holy Roman Empire
- In 1575, the Spanish government went bankrupt, and it's unpaid troops went on a rampage
- The Netherlands split into two
- Spain made a renewed effort to recon queer the whole area
- In 1584 Elizabeth finally decided that she must commit troops to prevent Dutch collapse
- In December, Robert Dudley arrived with a force of about 7,000 men
Effects:
- Spanish won which expanded colonial trade & overcoming their financial crisis
- English settlement in N. America was delayed until after the signing of the peace with Spain
- This enabled Spain to consolidate its New World Territories
- Spanish support helped the French Catholic league force Henry the 6th to Catholicism
- France remained Catholic
- England successfully defended the Protestant revolution
- Maintained control of Ireland
- Complete Spanish conquest of the Netherlands
- France remained friendly
