NOTE FROM MRS. LOGAN
This last week I spent had a lot of time watching some highly competitive football. Both college and NFL experienced some intense and important games. While I like watching football, I can admit I am not truly tuned into the game unless he Huskers are on the field. I often find myself paying attention to other things versus the game itself. I found myself focusing in the players and coaches and their actions towards the opposing team. In the highly competitive atmosphere I noticed some extreme unsportsman like behaviors, while also witnessing some beautiful acts of empathetic kindness.
Empathy is defined by Bene Brown as, "Feeling with People". As adults we are usually pretty good at being in touch with our own emotions, being in tune with the feelings over others can be more difficult. Empathy takes the feelings of compassion and sympathy to a whole new level. Empathy involves action while feelings of compassion and sympathy are often passive.
Bene Brown shares four steps in empathy; taking the perspective of another, avoiding judgement, recognizing the emotion and communicating with others.
Empathy has been proven to have many benefits. It helps humans build relationships, allows us to regulate our own emotions and supports us in being kind. As parents we play a critical role in building empathy in our children. Through our modeling and guidance through the steps of empathy we are helping to build kind and caring children. Eventually they may turn out to be the empathetic football players or coaches who at the end of a NFL playoff game authentically hug and console the opposing team.
