Update on Oak Distance Learning & Virtual Classroom
Dear Families,
I hope your family is healthy and well during these uncertain times.
First, I would like to share how much we appreciate the efforts made over the last two days with distance learning. I know it has been an effort to assist your children and help them get online.
Our staff is using a few tools, as the other schools are using across the district. Google Suite, which includes Google Sites, Google Docs, Google Classroom, Google Meet, as well as Seesaw for our younger students.
Over the last two days students have been exploring these tools. I have seen children navigate how to hold a conversation with 30-plus students and not have everyone speak at once.
I have seen a screen cast presented by staff. Classes have been establishing norms of expectations online in learning spaces. In the morning yesterday, I was able to join the 6th graders and some 3rd graders in Google Meet to say hello.
Yesterday, I had almost 1000 student comments shared with me since I am a teacher of every google class. I have now learned how to unsubscribe to every assignment, comment and notification, however still have the flexibility to check in and see student work and teacher instruction. We are all learning how to navigate this new challenge.
Parents, I ask that you remind your children the importance of using online etiquette when commenting and responding in Google Classroom. Our teachers will be resetting norms and expectations but a reminder from you will be effective and much appreciated.
Oak Parent Input form for 2020-2021
This form is OPTIONAL. Link here We take every child's needs into consideration when establishing classes. Our job is to ensure that classes are balanced by gender, academic needs, behavior, ethnicity, special services, etc. NO SPECIFIC TEACHER REQUESTS WILL BE CONSIDERED. Teacher assignments to grade levels are not yet finalized for next year.
All input forms are due NO LATER than April 12 Thank you!
Attendance Absence Reporting:
Daily attendance will still be taken as usual in the virtual classroom.
Please let Mrs. Y know via email: lyazdani@lasdschools.org, or online absence form, or call absentee line and leave a message if your child is sick and he/she cannot participate in virtual learning and it will then be changed to "X" excused absence.
PTA Update
Dear Oak Community--
I hope you and your kids are beginning to settle in to our new normal.
Remote learning began this week, and we’re all adjusting to the new tools and lesson delivery. In my house, my 6th grader has been our live-in “tech support”, helping the rest of us understand the Google Classroom platform.
For those of you that don’t have a 6th grade tech helper, we have a team of parents ready to help out. You can find the answers to some basic questions in this Quick Troubleshooting Guide. If you are still having trouble, please fill out this Google form, and one of our parent tech support volunteers will get back to you as soon as they can.
While we are staying home and socially distancing, it is important that we not stay socially isolated. I will be looking for ways to keep the Oak community connected during this time. If you have ideas, or would like to help out, please let me know.
Stay Safe & Healthy!,
Sara Payne
Oak PTA President
COVID-19 Info Sheet
Below is a link to a great information sheet on the Corona Virus (COVID-19).
It's important to note that the risk to general public still remains low and for approximately 80% of the population the disease is mild. Please continue to stress the importance of hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.
