Carver Coyote Newsletter
March 2020
March is Literacy Month! Here is a reading challenge for us all...Let's all read at least 15 minutes each day.
- Knowing something about the topic or setting makes a tougher book easier to comprehend. If your youngster is reading a novel set in California or Maine, he/she could talk to someone who has been there or look up the state to learn more.
- Encourage your child to look at a simpler book on the same subject. A picture book-book biography about Harriet Tubman may help your youngster better understand a textbook chapter on the civil rights movement, for instance.
- Suggest that your child read more challenging material with a pencil and paper. Your child can jot down questions, facts or words that he/she wants to learn more about.

Conversations with your child about school...
- Let's see what you brought home today- Look at completed work together and find out what your child is learning. Remember to respond to notes from your child's teachers and sign the agenda book, daily planner or weekly folder.
- Show me what you have for homework- It's your child's job to do their homework, but you play an important role too. Ask what the homework is and then look it over when your child is done.
- Ask your child to describe a book he/she enjoyed in school today. This gives you an idea of what your youngster prefers to read. Encourage reading by listening to your child read to you and take turns reading aloud to each other.
Hand washing is super important! Especially in light of all we have been hearing about the Coronavirus.
