A message from Mrs. Hines, our School Psychologist
Without warning or time to prepare, millions of parents are now helping to home-school their children for the first time, thanks to the coronavirus, which has shut down schools across the country. It’s OK to be angry, frustrated, overwhelmed, excited and nervous; all at once and perhaps frequently. Take a deep breath and use some positive self-talk about how you won’t ruin your children. Even some of these chaotic, stressful moments at home may be a future source of humor.
No matter how long this school-from-home experience lasts, families can make it fun by personalizing it. Many home school families name their family school, creating a mascot and even choosing colors. You can do the same and set three rules that will help your home/school run effectively. Other families write down their vision, answering the question “What do we want to accomplish while the kids are at home?”
The Mind YETI-from our Counseling Team
It’s a busy world out there, and these are uncertain and anxious times that can be challenging for children and families, so it may be difficult to remember to stop . . . take a breath . . . and think of the little things that are most important.
You can click on the link and go to Mind Yeti; which is a mindfulness app (currently offered for free) with research-based audio sessions designed to help kids and their adults calm their mind, improve focus, and better connect with the world around them.

At Home Learning Tips from Mrs. Hines
You can be flexible with time and are not restricted to school hours. Do whatever is best for you and your family.
Add in ample breaks, recess and snack times, as it is difficult for kids to sustain attention.
Incorporate talking, reading, singing, and role playing to make learning fun.
Incorporate chore time into the schedule. Measurements, ratios, and other mathematical concepts can be learned right in the kitchen.
Have your child write letters to people they care about while practicing handwriting and grammar.
Use discipline as an opportunity to teach, since impulsive and forgetful behavior is inevitable.
You might find your child is more productive if he/she is dressed appropriately. Pajamas might not provide the right mindset for being at school and doing school work even if it is from home.
Scheduling in social/peer time via phone calls or FaceTime play dates can maintain peer relationships.
If you have questions, do reach out to the teachers about their proposed work for your child, as they know what your child can and cannot handle.
Monitor your child’s assignments and make sure they complete all work and log in on time for online sessions. Provide any help they need, such as reading instructions and using laptops and other devices.
Utilize the resources that our school has provided and do not get overwhelmed with the amount of resources online. Let your children’s teacher(s) guide you regarding what may be helpful. And, please, as always reach out and ask for help if you need it. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher(s), adjustment counselor and administrators for advice as you support your child at home.
