Leaders in Learning
FUESD Administrators & Leaders, 9/6/13
What's Leaders in Learning?
What is Leaders in Learning? Well, it's that weekly paper bulletin that you might distribute to your staff each week, but this one is in a bright and shiny new digital format, and is intended for you, our district Leadership Team! This bi-weekly publication, created by Educational Services staff, is a way for us to learn about and share all of the exceptional things that are happening in our schools. This will be a place to communicate about upcoming events and reminders, and acknowledge the many effective ideas and practices in the district. Additionally, our hope is to provide teachers and leaders across the district with a tool to collaborate with one another. We've created headings around the ideas of The Leader in Me, so that we can continue to keep those ideas resonating. Aimee Plette has created a Leaders in Learning page for our teachers, so there will be lots of collaboration among us. Many thanks to Julie Norby, Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Solana Beach, for her ideas and motivation to get us going on this!
Think Win-Win
We only get one chance to prepare our students for a future that none of us can possibly predict. What are we going to do with that one chance?

Be Proactive
Thanks to Lea and our TOSA Team for creating school based displays in Rooms 5 & 6, the Professional Development Rooms at the District Office. They look terrific, and capture the unique spirit and accomplishments that are happening on each campus. Here are our first three!
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
We know that our teachers are eager to explore what effective Common Core Mathematics instruction should look like in the classroom. Here is a link showing how third grade students share their thinking about math.

A good resource for school and district leaders for CCSS! http://www.edudemic.com/2013/06/the-busy-teachers-quick-common-core-guide/
Here's a great song about the Seven Habits to the tune of "Dynamite." Just an FYI... You'll need to change your school name!
Synergize
- After looking at the data collected from the Ed. Tech survey, the overwhelming area of need was......the one iPad in the classroom. So, here is a great article from Edudemic talking about just that! http://www.edudemic.com/2013/08/the-one-ipad-classroom
- We have ordered the "MathRack" for students in Grades K and 1 to support their learning in DreamBox. http://www.mathrack.com
The original arithmetic rack, is a DreamBox tool to support and stretch primary student’s mathematical strategies and in turn their understanding of number sense, addition, subtraction and problem solving. The MathRack enhances understanding and reinforces higher level counting strategies. MathRack supports invented strategies of students using moveable objects.
Sharpen the Saw
- OK, folks. There is nothing like a good UCLA tailgate and football game to "Sharpen My Saw!" There are great recipes on this blog ... so even if you aren't a Bruin , enjoy these gastronomic delights. New recipes are posted after every UCLA home game. http://uclatailgategobruins.blogspot.com
- How do you Sharpen Your Saw? We'd like to share how our FUESD leaders relax and and unwind, so be sure to send us your "best practices!"
